ESSAOUIRA / THE LIVING TOGETHER

Hello Classy People,

Gallerie Tayeb Seddiki of Dar Souiri welcomed the new series of paintings signed by the marvelous Malika Demnati.

Titled THE LIVING TOGETHER, Malika exposed the details she saw on a Moroccan beach months ago. She painted visuals everyone could relate too, especially during summer 2019.
An exhibition of reality and a source of inspiration .

People who have been to a Moroccan beach during summer 2019 will perfectly understand each frame from THE LIVING TOGETHER paintings series of Malika Demnati. From women with burqa to women with bikinis, Malika showed the different dress codes that has been chosen by each woman to spend a day on the beach.

In a conversation with Malika, she told me that this series is ahead of what’s right and wrong, it’s is all about how women are tolerant facing each other. She also added that she spent days on the beach and she has never seen a woman judging another, they were all on the sand minding their businesses.
Malika has always considered that Morocco is a mirror of true diversity but this particular experience strengthened her belief.

I felt extremely related to the theme because I have raised questions regarding it during last summer. It was my first time witnessing Moroccan women swimming with their clothes instead of swimming suits on the beach which is fine if it makes them happy.
A woman must be free and respected to choose to wear what represents her and makes her comfortable away from men’s opinions.

I loved the way Malika managed to stay neutral while producing this project, she has transported real-life visuals to a painting canvas. She has not involved any personal or public opinions to project the message of no woman’s fashion style should win, it’s all about living together with our differences.

Artistically conversing, it was Malika’s first time painting people. It is pretty challenging for an artist who has always painted landscapes, but Malika triumphantly stepped outside her comfort zone to release such a meaningful project.
